A practical way to decide

  1. Decide which type of protection you are comparing and gather the declarations page from your current policy. A lower premium is not a useful comparison when it also buys less coverage.
  2. Ask every insurer for the same coverage limits, deductibles, optional coverages, drivers or property details, and policy term. The NAIC recommends comparing the same or similar coverage when shopping.
  3. Review what is excluded and how a loss would be valued. For home coverage, for example, actual cash value and replacement cost can produce very different results, while percentage deductibles can behave differently from fixed-dollar deductibles.
  4. Separate durable savings from conditional discounts. Ask whether a bundle, telematics program, paperless billing, or introductory discount can change at renewal and what information a monitoring program collects.
  5. Verify that the insurer and agent are licensed through your state insurance department. Keep the written quotes and note the effective date, payment schedule, cancellation terms, and contact method for claims.
  6. Do not cancel an existing policy until the replacement is confirmed active. This checklist is educational; a licensed insurance professional or state regulator can help with coverage questions specific to you.
